Rescue dogs, or lifeguard dogs, have always had a great importance in rescue operations at sea during dangerous situations: with their courage they face the waves of the sea to rescue swimmers in distress.
But how do you become a lifeguard dog? And what are the most suitable breeds?
The most suitable dog breeds for rescue at sea are generally those of large size, such as Labradors, Golden Retrievers and Newfoundlands: in fact, they are all excellent swimmers thanks to their physical strength, even in difficult conditions. Breeds such as German Shepherds , Pitbulls, Cattle Dogs, Landseers and others are also suitable.
If we want to make our four-legged friend a little hero of the sea, we must enroll him in a specific course for lifeguard dog. The course to become part of the team lasts a full year and is divided into two phases: the first is ground training , which includes “obedience” and “agility” courses, ie control lessons in crowded environments. and socializing with other dogs. This first part allows you to establish a close bond of trust between the dog and its instructor , in order to create their communication code to be able to understand each other with a few simple gestures or words. The second part includes training in the water , which facilitates the natural confidence with swimming that the dogs already naturally have, subsequently, over time, they will create simulations of real rescue, short and long distance, and shore transport.
At the end of this intense journey, our furry dog will be able to obtain the Sics rescue license , which is valid throughout the Italian territory and recognized by the Port Authorities and the Ministry of Transport and Navigation and allows them to intervene as Civil Protection operators. .
Even if it may seem like a game for our furry ones, their task is to be real heroes : that is to support their conductors in interventions of danger and recovery and to be able to save lives . It may happen to see water rescue dog units patrolling the bathing areas, often on free beaches, aboard inflatable boats or jet skis. In case of need or danger, a simple command from their trainer is enough for the “angels of the sea” and they do not hesitate a second to jump in to save lives.
If you think your four-legged friend might be suitable for this important task, sign him up for the course: with a little commitment and perseverance, he can make a big difference in saving lives!
